Being placed on the maritime Danube along important terrestrial and fluvial routes, Galaţi was visited by a large number of travellers, especially after the introduction of passenger steamers plying between Vienna and Constantinople in the 1830s. Many of such travel accounts are referred to in the large collections “Călători străini despre Ţările Române” [Foreign Travellers on the Romanian Principalities] (11 volumes) and “Călători străini despre Ţările Române în secolul al XIX-lea” [Foreign Travellers on the Romanian Principalities in the 19th Century] (8 volumes so far). Some of the importance references to Galaţi are also included in a separate volume[1].
